WARNING SIGNS CAN SAVE LIVES
In only three days, more than one hundred Kenyan have died in different circumstances.
In all three incidents the deaths could have been avoided.
Figures appearing in the media area startling. A road accident claimed 33 lives after
eight vehicles were involved in a ghastly pile-up near NAIVASHA. The cause" A fully
truck cruising at top speed.
In another at least 70 people were killed or drowned in the River KERIO of RIFT VALLEY
Province. Why? Violence resulting from cattle rustling.

US$ 154 MILLION PROJECT TO FIX KENYA'S POT-HOLED ROADS
AT LAST the KSh 8.53 BILLION programme to rehabilitate deeply cratered roads in 36
urban areas of KENYA will begin in June.
This follows the WORLD BANK's approval of the award of supervision contracts to six
engineering consultants.
The work also includes repairs to street lighting construction of some duel
carriageways and provision of footbridges.
Pot-holed roads in NAIROBI and upcountry and coastal towns as well as arteries that
join the urban areas have become a major talking point among Kenyans recently.

16 KILLED IN RIVER PLUNGE
SIXTEEN people died instantly while others (number unspecified) were injured when their
matatu plunged into the RUIRU RIVER on NAIROBI/THIKA highway late Tuesday.
Survivors, who included a child, swam to the banks of the swollen river from where they
were rescued and taken to hospital.
The victims of the 2.30 pm tragedy bring to 24 the number of people killed on Kenya's
highways of death in the past three days.

LEADER IN PLEA OVER ROADS
ELDORET MUNICIPAL COUNCILLORS Friday appealed to the municipality to allocate emergency
funds for the recarpetting of roads and streets lights in the town.
The civic leaders told the Deputy Mayor Coun MICHAEL CHERUIYOT that although there were
plans to improve sections of the road with donor funds, the present condition of some
roads was pathetic and called for immediate attention.
Contributing on minutes presented by the town planning committee during a full council
meeting yesterday, councillors urged the municipality's planning department to patch main
roads including the RONALD NGALA street in the town centre.

NEW NATIONAL ROAD SAFETY BODY STARTED
A national body aimed at minimising road accidents has been launched.
The KENYA PROFESSIONAL DRIVING ASSOCIATION (KPDA) will subject its members to extensive
oral and practical trade or proficiency tests before grading them accordingly under
categories One to Four.
The interim Secretary-General Mr F K MUTAHI, said carelessness on the part of drivers,
planners and policy makers was to blame for the escalating road carnage.

STREET BOY CRUSHED TO DEATH BY BUS
A STREET boy who tried to dash across RONALD NGALA STREET in NAIROBI to join his
friends was hit by a city bus and his head pulped mid Wednesday.
The boy, whose age was estimated at 10, was killed. He was rushing across the street in
pursuit of his colleagues, who had earlier made it safely to the opposite side.
A KBS bus cruising at a moderate speed hit the boy, flung him into the road and one of
his front tyres crushed his head.

EIGHT DIE IN HORROR SMASH

EIGHT people died on the spot on Sunday evening and several others were seriously
injured when a lorry and a KENYA ARMY van collided at KEDOWA TRADING CENTRE along the
NAKURU/KERICHO ROAD.
The lorry belonging to the KENYA PYRETHRUM BOARD was travelling towards KERICHO while
the army vehicle was heading for Nakuru when the accident occurred at 4.40 pm.
According to eyewitnesses, the Kenya Army van was trying to overtake when the driver
rammed into the lorry. The van was reduced into a mangled wreck.

FIVE MORE PERISH IN ROAD ACCIDENT
FIVE people yesterday died instantly and three others were seriously injured in a road
accident along the KITALE-WEBUYE road near MATUNDA shopping centre in TRANS NZOIA
District.
The five died when their driver who was trying to overtake lost control and hit on an
incoming Mistubishi canter reg KAE 466S.
Chief Inspector FRANCIS LOMANGI confirmed the deaths in a UGANDAN registered vehicle,
UPS 910, a Toyota Corolla.

8 DIE IN SEPARATE ROAD ACCIDENTS

EIGHT people died in separate road accidents in the last two days, police headquarters
said yesterday.
Two passengers died on the spot while another was seriously injured when a vehicle
collided with a lorry along NAKURU/NAIROBI road near MARURA area in Nakuru District.
The matatu had 17 passengers on board. The vehicle was descending down a hill when its
rear tyre burst and lost control.
TWO KILLED, SIX INJURED IN ROAD MISHAP
Two passengers died while six others were critically injured in a road accident on
Waiyaki Way, Nairobi, last night. The Peugeot 505 station wagon bound for Kisumu was
reduced to a mangled wreck near a popular food place known as Njugunas.
The driver who survived the accident complained of back and head pains. He was rushed
to Kikuyu Hospital. According to the Red Cross publicity officer John Ndungu, it took
other motorists ten minutes to move the six passengers who were trapped in the wreckage.
56 KILLED IN BUS ACCIDENT
The Nithi bridge bus accident on the Chuka-Meru road on Wednesday evening killed 56
passengers, it was confirmed yesterday. The accident occured when a Stagecoach bus with
more than 100 passengers plunged into the fast-flowing Nithi River, 60 feet below the
bridge. Forty-two people died at the scene while the other 14 died at the Chogoria Mission
Hospital.
The Meru South District police boss, Gilbert Maingi, said that among the dead was an
administration Police corporal attached to the district commissioner's office in Chuka
Town.
FOUR DIE ON THE MOMBASA ROAD
Four people - a bus driver, a woman who had just given birth, the infant and an elderly
man died yesterday following a fresh traffic snarl-up at Kyulu on Mombasa road. " I
watched the man collapse and die," an eyewitness said in an interview. Passengers
watched in shock as the Akamba bus driver collapsed in a heap, slipped into a fit of
convulsions and died.
More harrowing tales emerged from the trouble-ridden Mombasa road - dubbed the Highway
of Death. Other passengers accounts had it that the woman died after delivery. The infant
died shortly afterwards as passengers watched helpless. Embu police boss Kiptum Manyinya
confirmed the deaths and said full investigations had been launched to establish the
circumstances surrounding the deaths in the regrettable epoch.

EIGHT KILLED, TWO HURT AS MATATU AND LORRY COLLIDE
EIGHT people were killed on Wednesday after the matatu they were travelling in collided
with a lorry along the BUNGOMA/ELDORET road.
The lorry driver, FRANCIS LUMULIKA and his unnamed loader were admitted to a WEBUYE
hospital in serious condition.
The accident occurred at CHIMOI area in LUGARI District. The matatu was headed for
NAIROBI from BUNGOMA.

SIXTEEN KILLED IN TWO ROAD ACCIDENTS
SIXTEEN people were killed and 38 injured in two separate road accidents in NAKURU and
THIKA Sunday.
In Nakuru, 11 passengers died and 18 were injured in an accident involving three
vehicles on the Nairobi/Nakuru road.
The accident occurred five days after 17 people died and 40 others were injured when
two buses crashed head-on the Nakuru/Eldoret road.

FUEL FIRE TOLL RISES TO 19
NINE other people have died as a result of burns from the Monday petrol tanker fire in
SIAYA, raising the toll to 19.
The petrol tanker overturned Monday and burst into flames during a scramble for the
fuel.
The nine deaths were confirmed at the SIAYA DISTRICT HOSPITAL (five) and the NYANZA
PROVINCE HOSPITAL (four).Daily Nation

EIGHT PERISH IN ROAD SMASH
EIGHT people died on the spot when the peugeot matatu they were travelling in was
involved in a head-on collision with a bus Wednesday.
The matatu which was travelling to NAIROBI from NAKURU collided with the bus which was
coming from Nairobi.
Survivors said the bus rammed into the peugeot station wagon and ran over it before
rolling over, a short distance from the KIJABE junction.

MATATU DRIVER CHARGED OVER FBI CAR SMASH-UP
A MATATU driver whose vehicle allegedly rammed into a vehicle carrying two Federal
Bureau of Investigation agents was Thursday charged in a NAIROBI court with driving
without care and attention.
KAMOCHU MURAYA denied driving a Nissan matatu without care and attention, hence causing
injuries to the passengers in a HYUNDAI car and causing extensive damage to it last
Wednesday at 6.45 am along Kenyatta Avenue street in Nairobi.
Muraya, who appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate JACINTA WAKAHORA was also
charged with driving on a public road without a driving licence and a Public Service
Vehicle licence.

Six die in accidents
Six people were killed and 25 others injured in separate accidents in Nairobi and
Kiambu yesterday.
In Nairobi, four passengers died and 14 were critically injured when a Nairobi-bound
commuter taxi (matatu) plunged into Kamiti River between Kahawa West and Githurai 44
estates at 7.45 am. A senior traffic policeman said three passengers died on arrival at
Kiambu District Hospital while the body of the fourth victim was fished from the river.
In the Kiambu accident, two people were killed and more than 15 critically injured in
two multiple accidents on the Limuru highway.
Six separate accidents were reported on the highway. The first accident occurred at
Rungiri area at 6.20 am and involved six vehicles. The second, involving three vehicles,
occurred an hour later at Gitaru - about one and a half kilometre from the first one. All
the vehicles were travelling towards Nairobi. Traffic policemen at the scene said the
accidents were caused by the slippery road after a morning downpour. The accidents held up
other motorists on the busy highway up to 9.30 am.
Two people were killed in the Gitaru accident involving a trailer, a pick-up and an
Isuzu truck.
In the Rungiri crash involving a Nairobi-bound bus and a saloon car, two people were
injured. Four vehicles which were following the bus crashed as they tried to avoid the
accident ahead. Casualties were taken to Kikuyu Mission Hospital and Kenyatta National
Hospital.
