South Uist

South Uist is reached by a causeway from Benbecula in the North and is now also linked by a similar causeway to Eriskay in the South.  The main ferry terminal at the south of the island is at Lochboisdale and ferries sail from here to Oban.

The Nature Reserve at Loch Druidibeg is an important breeding ground for Greylag Geese.

The remains of Flora Macdonald's birthplace lie at Milton near the shores of Loch Kildonan.

A number of black houses (tigh dubh) are to be found in South Uist, some have been restored to full use.  Black houses are so named because of the smoke from the fire which escaped through the thatched roof rather than going up a chimney, and made everything black.

The best sandy beaches are found, once again, on the West side of the island.
