North Uist
By sea, North Uist is reached by ferry from Leverburgh in the south of
Harris, or from the mainland by ferry from Uig (Skye), which arrives at
Lochmaddy. A causeway now links North Uist with Berneray, to the
North.

North Uist is the largest island in the Southern Hebrides.
Approximately one third of the area is made up of lochs.
North Uist has an RSPB reserve at Balranald and it is here that you may be
lucky enough to hear the elusive Corncrake calling, or catch a glimpse of the
red-necked phalarope.

There are some magnificent beaches on the west side of North Uist, and the
island is dotted with innumerable lochs. There is a wealth of prehistoric
standing stones, cairns and brochs.
Taigh Chearsabhagh Arts Centre in Lochmaddy has proved a great success,
providing a number of jobs and forming a focal point for art in the community.
A causeway links North Uist with Benbecula. |
